Corporate Background

 

Formed in 2002, Sikumiut (Inuktitut for "people of the ice") is registered as an Inuit Business with the Nunatsiavut Government and is considered as an Aboriginal Business under Federal Government criteria.  The firm is incorporated under the laws of Newfoundland and Labrador and is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEG-NL), as well as the Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Industries Association (NEIA), and the Newfoundland and Labrador Oil & Gas Industry Association (NOIA).  The Sikumiut owners and equal partners are Ron Webb, an Inuk residing in Nain; Gus Dicker, an Inuk residing in Nain; Leroy Metcalfe, an Inuk originally from Nain, now residing in St. John’s; and Bevin LeDrew, a resident of St. John’s.  The company has offices in Nain, Happy Valley-Goose Bay and St. John’s, with a core staff of 20, seasonally growing to over 40. 

 

Since its formation, the company has focused on work opportunities in Newfoundland and Labrador, and has been quite successful in working for a variety of clients, including Environmental Studies Research Funds, New Millennium Capital Corporation, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Vale, Aurora Energy Resources Inc,  Nunatsiavut Government, Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board, GSI Seismic Offshore, TGS Nopec, Wabush Mines, the Labrador Inuit Development Corporation, the Lower Churchill Project, Defense Construction Canada and Canadian Wildlife Service. 

 

Sikumiut services include environmental impact assessment, environmental site assessments and remediation, baseline surveys and monitoring; logistics support and expediting, Inuit observers for seismic vessel operations in the Labrador Sea; fish habitat assessments and compensation planning, field laboratory services,  environmental effects monitoring, ice surveys, wildlife (polar bear) monitoring and regulatory review. 

 

Sikumiut has grown significantly since its formation and through its network of associations with other environmental and engineering firms is able to offer clients customized study teams familiar with local regulators and proponents, augmented by a broader range and depth of services available from this network.
